Stevedores’ Strikes Block Brazilian Ports

2017-03-17

On March 15, Brazilian stevedores organized an industrial action which affected port operations at all ports in the country, Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) informed.

“Stoppages were observed at all ports on Brazilian coast, some for hours and others for the whole day,” a representative from WSS’ Santos office said.

Dockers suspended their activities to protest against social security changes proposed by the Brazilian government.

According to WSS, The Port Labours National Federation estimated that over 20,000 affiliated workers would adhere to the cause.

Port operations resumed on March 16.
