Maltese customs inspectors have seized more than 300 kg of cocaine while inspecting a container at Malta Freeport.
The name of a ship, which was carrying the container from Guayaquil in Ecuador to Spain and made a stop in Malta on March 12, was not disclosed.
Malta’s Customs Department said the cocaine was discovered in hold-all bags in the container supposedly containing cans of pineapple.
“It is estimated that the haul has a street value of tens of millions of euro,” the Customs Department said in a statement.
Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta, said in a tweet that the cocaine haul was the biggest in the country’s history.
