Royal HaskoningDHV to explore deep sea port potential for Myanmar

2017-07-07

Jason Chiang, Director of Ocean Shipping Consultants, a company of Royal HaskoningDHV, will be discussing the topic of Myanmar’s port development at the 15th ASEAN Ports & Shipping Conference 2017, taking place for the first time in Yangon, Myanmar from 6-7 July.

Hosted by the Myanmar Port Authority, the event continues to be the biggest annual Container Ports and Terminal Operations Exhibition and Conference in the ASEAN region with around 500 attendees from the region’s leading shippers, cargo owners logistics companies and ports, to name a few.

Jason will be talking at the event on the topic of “Myanmar port development – ‘From river to deep sea'”, providing a review of Myanmar’s port market and an outlook for its future. He commented: “Myanmar is one of the fastest growing areas in South East Asia – and that means that the maritime industry has huge potential for development. The city of Yangon is the key hinterland for the country but is located in-land on the Yangon River, which means that its port is restricted in size.

“When we think about the future for this region, it’s very likely that the city will need a larger port. At the conference I will be exploring the various options for a deep sea port, and what that could bring to the region as a whole. We have seen this sort of strategy implemented very successfully elsewhere and I look forward to sharing my experience at the event.”

Jason’s talk takes place at 12.30pm on Thursday 6 July during the 15th ASEAN Ports & Shipping Conference 2017, after which Jason will act as the Chairperson of the conference on Friday 7 July.
