The first three days of last week each saw capesize rates find a small amount of incremental support. On Thursday, though, the average daily capesize rate rose by $1,404 (15%). This occurred due to a jump in Chinese iron ore fixtures (5 capesize vessels were chartered to haul iron ore to Chinese buyers on Thursday). Another 6 capesize vessels were chartered to haul iron ore to Chinese buyers on Friday.

Capesize availability has become much tighter due to the previous two-week surge in Chinese iron ore demand (availability has become especially tight in the Atlantic basin). A total of 61 capesize vessels were chartered to haul iron ore during the Weeks Ending September 21 and September 28. This comes out to an average of 30.5 capesize iron ore fixtures. In comparison, the rest of this year has seen an average of only 15 capesize iron ore fixtures come to the market each week.

The surge in capesize chartering activity that occurred during the Weeks Ending September 21 and September 28, and the renewed rebound seen during the end of last week, have been enough to significantly change the capesize market. This is why capesize rates have been able to increase so much during the last few weeks.

Capesize rates are currently averaging $11,237/day, an increase of $3,198 (40%) from a week ago. Going forward, capesize port congestion is poised to now increase (first at major loading ports; then at major unloading ports) due to the recent surge in iron ore fixtures. As a result, capesize rates could find even more support in the near-term future
